Tudung not compulsory in schools
KUALA LUMPUR: It's final. The wearing of the tudung in schools is not compulsory and the issue should no longer arise, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Noh Omar said.
He said the ministry would not defend any school or teacher who implemented rules that went against ministry circulars.
"Schools could implement rules but they should ensure that these are consistent with ministry circulars.
"Any teacher found contravening ministry circulars will not be defended by the ministry if any problem arises," he told a press conference at the Parliament lobby yesterday.
He was responding to a question on the implementation of rules regarding the wearing of the tudung by students.
The issue was raised by Datuk Wan Adnan Wan Mamat (BN – Indera Mahkota) who claimed that his daughter, a student in Sekolah Kebangsaan Perempuan Methodist in Kuantan, suffered discrimination because she did not wear a tudung.
Wan Adnan also claimed that she was also transferred out from her class because of this.
In another incident in Penang last month, the principal of SMK Abdullah Munshi withdrew her school's Under-15 and Under-18 netball teams from the Penang Schools Sports Council tournament because some players had removed their tudung during the competition.
"The issue over the wearing of the tudung should no longer arise. The ministry has issued circulars stating that Muslim students are encouraged, not compelled, to wear the tudung," Noh said.
"It is not a breach of discipline if a Muslim student does not wear a tudung."
Noh added that the ministry had also issued a circular on how a tudung should be worn.
"It states very clearly the type of tudung which should be worn and teachers cannot make rules to change the type of tudung, including changing the current 'V-shaped' tudung to a 'tudung labuh (long headscarf) '," he said.
On Wan Adnan's case, Noh said he would investigate the matter.

_______________________________________________________________Lihatlah bagaimana dengan slumbernya seorang menteri boleh putar belit hukum yang Allah tetapkan dalam AlQuraan. Muslim students are encouraged? Not compelled?!
Dah tu kalau Allah marah takpe plak?? Tak heboh plak dalam parlimen. Tapi bile cikgu bagi "pengajaran" sikit je..mula heboh 1 parlimen pasal isu tudung nih. Yang pakcik2 menteri ni pon..sebelum nak cakap ape2...baik bukak AlQuraan yang dijadikan hiasan kat rumah tu dulu..baru cakap kat parlimen. Ajar anak2 dengan didikan AlQuraan..bukan didikan ala2 gaya hidup menteri.
Kalau malas nak bukak...aku bagi kat sini jelah..
